And Ive thought a lot about the causes of those outcomes. Why do some succeed faster than others? Why do some get opportunities and others dont? Why do some get stuck in their careers? The answer, Ive found, to all of these questions is making a lasting impression. If you consistently make a positive, memorable impact on your boss, your co-workers, and even your employees, youll increase your chances of getting hand-picked for the best opportunities when they come knocking, paving your way to career success. It may sound simple, but leaving that lasting impression takes a strategic approach. Here are five tips thatll help you make your mark and be remembered over anyone else in the room. 1. Keep it RealI like the prozentanteil by Oscar Wilde that says, Be yourself, everyone else is taken. Sometimes, we get so caught up in trying to impress that we forget to show our true selves- we hold back opinions, squash our creative ideas, and downplay our personalities, all for fear of being judged.Recently, at a leadership program in San Francisco, I witnessed the opposite- and it welches so refreshing. Several groups of leaders from across the company were asked to present their recommendations based on a real-life customer problem. Naturally, seven of the eight teams gravitated toward sending the best sales or marketing leader on their teams to deliver their recommendations. But notlage one team. Instead, they sent the least obvious pick- an engineering leader. To everyones surprise, he took us all on an eye-opening customer journey laced with Star Wars metaphors. Some of his feedback was extremely revealing, but it was accepted very well because it was unfiltered. He came across as a creative problem solver with a sense of humor, and, needless to say, that presentation was the one that everyone rememb ered because it was authentic and brilliant. 2. Make Deposits, Not WithdrawalsJust like a bank, every exchange or interaction that you have is like a deposit or withdrawal. People either feel energized after working with you- or exhausted. To make sure youre in the former camp, examine the factors that contribute toward deposits. Are you easy to work with? Do you give the person with whom youre speaking undivided attention? Do you support your team during peak periods of stress? Are you leaving conversations making others feel empowered, motivated, and energized? These are great leadership qualities that will help you grow your deposits. As I share this advice, one vice president that I work with comes to mind. Hes known as a technology innovator and leads one of the largest teams at my company. He knows very well that positive emotion accelerates innovation. As such, he makes a concerted effort to leave conversations making people feel inspired. And they usually do.One easy tip tha t you can try today is giving the person you are speaking with your full attention. I often find people distracted in their own thoughts. When youre having a conversation with someone, give your undivided attention and pay a close watch to your non-verbal gestures. Give eye contact, and dont get distracted by the 10 action items waiting for you (or your phone). The more focused you are in your conversations, the more youll get out of them, and the more deposits youll make. 3. Get Comfortable With PressureIn the business world, people are defined by how they handle stress- its called cope-ability. Whether youre presenting in front of a massive audience or dealing with a customer service crisis, nailing the pressure moments will define a lasting impression. So, pay attention to how you handle stress and pressure, and start getting comfortable with it. In fact, go out of your way to put yourself in uncomfortable situations. When you do this often enough, youll be more immune to pressur e when you are stress-tested- it just becomes more normal. I think its similar to muscle memory, where the act gets so routine, your body just goes into autopilot.Being in your comfort zone for too long only creates a situation that makes it easier for you to crack under pressure. But if youre constantly in the stretch zone, youll create a habit of performing well no matter what the pressure level.4. Be Bright, Be Brief, Be GoneThis tip is something thats stuck with me from a coaching session I had a few years ago. Its all about being an expert in your line of work and presenting your ideas in a succinct and simple way. First, you need to know what youre great at, not what youre good at. And when you know what that is, dont be afraid to offer solutions and bring value to discussions. Whether youre presenting at a meeting or having an impromptu chat with your boss, nail your point with simple language and simple solutions. Be bright, be brief, be gone- and youll always be remembered. 5. Get ElectedYou often hear the advice to manage up and to promote yourself, making sure the higher-ups know about your achievements. And many people in the corporate world have climbed the ranks this way. But this approach is never sustainable because it lacks authenticity. In the long run, a vote for him or her approach is much more powerful than vote for me. You want to be elected the person who people throughout the organization want to help, want to work for, and want to see succeed. This will happen when you can authentically influence your audience throughout the organization, not just manage up. In fact, some of the best leaders Ive worked with meet with cross-functional groups, at all levels, all the time. Im privy to a vice presidents calendar, and Ive noticed that he works with a wide audience across the whole company, frequently meeting with people at all levels. As it turns out, hes one of those who gets the most support throughout the company. Ask yourself this quest ion, Do I work with a diverse group of people at all levels? If you do, great. If you dont, look for ways to extend your network to a broader set of colleagues. Coming in third was ethical standards at 38%.Lori Goler, Facebooks head of People, wrote along with several others in the Harvard Business Review that after surveying their workers twice a year, the three main values that came up were career, community, and cause similar to the results of this survey. Community is close to fair treatment, with Goler describing community as feeling respected, cared about, and recognized by others.More on the scale of whats valued38% that the company maintain ethical standards29% that the company be profitable and growing24% that the company make the world a better placeOlder workers value fair pay the most, Millennials care about valuesCompensation was found to be the most important value amongst all ages. Still, when the age groups were broken out, Millennials were found to value compensation the most at 29%, less than Gen Xers (32%), and far below Baby Boomers (42%).Conversely, 14% of Millennials cared about their workplace making the world a better place, compared with 4% of baby boomers.The survey points to the Deloitte 2016 Millennial Survey for confirmation, which also found that salary trumped all, including a companys social impact.The takeawaySalary is king, unsurprisingly otherrecent research by Accutemps also found that salary was the most important consideration for employees. Another survey said that 52% of employees said a higher salary was needed for them to remain at their company.But benefits and work-life balance is also important data from Glassdoor suggested that attractive benefits and perks (48%) and an easy commute (47%) just edged out salary (46%).That said, it should be no surprise that fair treatment is right behind it in a time where sexual discrimination, racial discrimination, pregnancy/maternity discrimination, and sexual harassment all issues that ultimately influence pay, promotions, or even the right to keep your job are in the news and being talked about widely.

I might get a minor injury that prfests me from working out. Something at work might go wrong.Do you know that feeling? Before you know it, youre questioning everything about yur life, career, health, or relationship.You do everything to resist the situation. You try to fix it. You feel compelled to address the disturbance. Now, youre getting sucked in by negative thoughts. At this point, something that started as a small annoyance became a big life problem.You feel like quitting your job or relationship. You feel like everything works against you. And that nothing is worth it.Thats a negative thought loop. Ive experienced that very often. And I bet you have too. Why do we experience this?Its about control. We think life should be a certain way. In other words, we want everything to happen the way we want. And if it doesnt, we flip out. Negative thought loops often start when something comes to an end. Have you noticed that?Filling the voidLook,everythingin life comes to an end. Your job, business, career, relationships, friendships, and so forth. And every time something comes to an end in our life, its like a little death. Something dies and leaves a void inside us.This event by itself is neither good or bad.Its the nature of life. We can turn endings into bad things by trying to replace the thing that left our life. For example, when a relationship ends, a lot of people try to fill the void by taking on more work.Ive done that as well. All the time and energy you spent on the relationship becomes free when it ends. And because you dont want to feel alone, you try to fill the void by working more. You want to set higher goals and do a better job.But thats only you escaping reality. The truth is that endings suck. But its also a natural part of life. We should not resist change. Some things, we cant replace in life.If you lose your job, you cant simply replace working by spending more time with your spouse. And yet, thats exactly what many of us do. We either lose our job or fail at work and we think, Now I can at least spend more time with my family.Youre trying to fill the void.But that takes too much energy.And when some minor thing disturbs you, it causes your foundation to shake. Why? Because your foundation was weak all this time.Everything has its placeYou cant fill a relationship void with work or exercise. You cant fill a health void with alcohol or drugs. You cant fill a work void with spirituality.You need to catch yourself when youre trying to escape reality. And thats one of the hardest things in life. Too often, people live their entire life in denial. We cant let that happen. We need to look inward.I can tell you from personal experience thats very hard. I always struggle when something in my life ends. My first response is always to find a replacement. But Ive learned that everything has its place.You cant replace your friends with your boyfriend or girlfriend. You cant replace exercise with working more. You need to allocate the right amount of time and energy to all aspects of life.Thousands of years of evolution has shown us that human beings havesimilar needs. We need safety, support, relationships, joy, perspective, and something useful to do with our time. Thats true for every person.When you recognize that simple fact about life, it forces you to take a helicopter view. You need to elevate your perspective on your life. When youre stuck in a negative thought cycle, you have zero perspective. Youre consumed by your thoughts.You need to force yourself to look at life in general. Not just your current situation. Look at lifes nature- its about motion.Letting goMichael A. Singer, an entrepreneur who once ran a large software company, and the author ofThe Untethered Soul, summarized the concept of letting go wellIts pretty black-and-white. You either let go or you dont.He speaks from experience. Singer was prosecuted by the Department of Justice for securities fraud. During that time, he risked losing it all.Eventually, all charges against him were dropped and his name was cleared, but he let go of it way before that. In fact, he wrote The Untethered Soulwhilehe was being prosecuted.If a person whos facing the risk of losing it all can let go, you and I also can. People often come up with all kinds of excuses. They say its easier said than done and that letting go is not easy.No one said its easy. We all have our own challenges and obstacles.
