CV

CVExpert Tips How to Construct an IT Resume/CVFind the dos and donts when it comes to crafting a stellar IT resume and deckblatt letter.By Chris Ward Shawn Powell As the IT job market becomes increasingly competitive, landing the right job has become almost an art form. Which is why a resume template with fill-in-the-blanks will no longer put you at the top of the pile.Although there is no set way in creating a perfect resume or cover letter, there are a few key commonalities that are absolutely necessary to include and/or avoid.Though there isnt just one right way to develop or present a resume or CV, the materials successful candidates submit to prospective employers have a few commonalities.Include in Your Resume Contact information Too often, well-qualified candidates never get a call about the job because they failed to provide a phone number and a professional email address.Appropriate skill set Identify and highlight the skills you have that relate specifically to the job for which you are applying for- and do so succinctly.Incorporate attributes from the job posting in your resume and cover letter to better connect yourself with the job you are applying for.Work experience Provide information about where you previously worked and what skills you gained from the experiences. In your explanation, make sure it is relevant to the specific job position you are applying for.*Note Be sure to use the phrase work experience rather than professional or career experience. Work experience is the term commonly used in most applicant tracking systems (ATS).Certification(s) Certifications are proof of your skills and education. These are your key credibility factors and can set you apart from your competition. Having the right certifications has shown to increase your chances of mobility and higher pay.Education Highlight any educational hintergrund relevant to the position, as this may set you apart from the competition. Be sure to include your college major and GPA if applicable.Avoid in Your ResumeInformation overload Too many details can overwhelm prospective employers. When reviewing resumes, its commonplace for employers to skim through resumes to find the points that they are looking for. Give them enough to know that youre qualified for the position, with the goal being to intrigue them enough that you will get an interview.Irrelevant personal information Employers need to spend their time getting to know you professionally, so hobbies, Greek affiliations, favorite movies, etc. are unnecessary. Save your personal information for the interview, when personality fit becomes more important in the selection process.Fancy graphics or clip-art Your resume should look professional and clean. Dont waste space on your resume on anything that wont help an employer better understand your qualifications for the job.Lengthy documentation The best resumes are typically kept at one page. Be concise so prospective employers can quickly and accurately a ssess your qualifications. Chances are they review hundreds of resumes, so ones that are too long may get put aside for later review.Include in Your Cover LetterYour cover letter could be considered your first interview with a prospective employer. This is your first opportunity to make a good impression When drafting your cover letter, here are some tips that will make your materials stand outRead instructions thoroughly Be sure to read the application materials and instructions thoroughly to understand submission requirements. Pay special attention to whom you are writing to and make sure all grammar and spelling is accurate.Be unique Your cover letter can and should be a differentiator between you and other candidates. Let your personality shine through. Maintain your professional voice, but aim to capture the employers attention.Certification name-dropping List your certification(s) and relate them to your experience. For example, I use my CCNA in my consultations with customers and colleagues to build and troubleshoot effective, efficient networks. Its all in the details Your cover letter should be personable, professional, well edited, grammatically correct, and should address the specific role for which you are applying. This is where you tell your story and why you are the best fit for the company you are applying to.To Whom It May Concern Avoid using generic greetings on your cover letter. Spend some time researching who will be reviewing application materials and address your cover letter directly to the appropriate party. Personalizing your cover letter can go a long way.Electronic or hard copy? Both Always have a hard copy available and ready to go in case the employer requests it of you.As CBT Nuggets trainer Chris Ward says, All good things come to those who plan, stay consistent, and dont give up. So be patient in your job search. Plan your application materials well. And work to be consistent in your efforts. Never, ever give up on yourself. Wit h patience and a little planning, you will find the right job

Employees value compensation, fair treatment the most

Employees value compensation, fair treatment the mostEmployees value compensation, fair treatment the mostEmployees value fair pay the most in a job, according to a new Clutch survey of 540 employees from different businesses, calledWhat Do Employees Value Most in Their Job? 55% of respondents ranked fair compensation as the attribute they valued most in an employer. Fair treatment was almost as important at 54%. Coming in third was ethical standards at 38%.Lori Goler, Facebooks head of People, wrote along with several others in the Harvard Business Review that after surveying their workers twice a year, the three main values that came up were career, community, and cause similar to the results of this survey. Community is close to fair treatment, with Goler describing community as feeling respected, cared about, and recognized by others.More on the scale of whats valued38% that the company maintain ethical standards29% that the company be profitable and growing24% that the company make the world a better placeOlder workers value fair pay the most, Millennials care about valuesCompensation was found to be the most important value amongst all ages. Still, when the age groups were broken out, Millennials were found to value compensation the most at 29%, less than Gen Xers (32%), and far below Baby Boomers (42%).Conversely, 14% of Millennials cared about their workplace making the world a better place, compared with 4% of baby boomers. The survey points to the Deloitte 2016 Millennial Survey for confirmation, which also found that salary trumped all, including a companys social impact. The takeawaySalary is king, unsurprisingly otherrecent research by Accutemps also found that salary was the most important consideration for employees. Another survey said that 52% of employees said a higher salary was needed for them to remain at their company. But benefits and work-life balance is also important data from Glassdoor suggested that attractive benefits and perks (48%) and an easy commute (47%) just edged out salary (46%).That said, it should be no surprise that fair treatment is right behind it in a time where sexual discrimination, racial discrimination, pregnancy/maternity discrimination, and sexual harassment all issues that ultimately influence pay, promotions, or even the right to keep your job are in the news and being talked about widely.

How to break a negative thought loop

How to break a negative thought loopHow to break a negative thought loopSometimes a small thing disturbs me. Somebody might say something that rubs me the wrong way. I might get a minor injury that prfests me from working out. Something at work might go wrong.Do you know that feeling? Before you know it, youre questioning everything about yur life, career, health, or relationship. You do everything to resist the situation. You try to fix it. You feel compelled to address the disturbance. But heres the thing, you dont control the disturbance.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThat frustrates you even more. Now, youre getting sucked in by negative thoughts. At this point, something that started as a small annoyance became a big life problem. You feel like quitting your job or relationship. You feel like everything works against you. And that nothing is worth it.Thats a negative thought loop. Ive experienced that very often. And I bet you have too. Why do we experience this? Its about control. We think life should be a certain way. In other words, we want everything to happen the way we want. And if it doesnt, we flip out. Negative thought loops often start when something comes to an end. Have you noticed that?Filling the voidLook, everythingin life comes to an end. Your job, business, career, relationships, friendships, and so forth. And every time something comes to an end in our life, its like a little death. Something dies and leaves a void inside us.This event by itself is neither good or bad.Its the nature of life. We can turn endings into bad things by trying to replace the thing that left our life. For example, when a relationship ends, a lot of people try to fill the void by taking on more work.Ive done that as well. All the time and energy you spent on the relationship becomes free when it ends. And because you dont want to feel alone, you try to fill the void by working more. You want to set higher goals and do a better job.But thats only you escaping reality. The truth is that endings suck. But its also a natural part of life. We should not resist change. Some things, we cant replace in life.If you lose your job, you cant simply replace working by spending more time with your spouse. And yet, thats exactly what many of us do. We either lose our job or fail at work and we think, Now I can at least spend more time with my family.Youre trying to fill the void. But that takes too much energy. And when some minor thing disturbs you, it causes your foundation to shake. Why? Because your foundation was weak all this time.Everything has its placeYou cant fill a relationship void with work or exercise. You cant fill a health void with alcohol or drugs. You cant fill a work void with spirituality. You need to catch yourself when youre trying to escape reality. And thats one of the hardest things in life. Too often, people live their entire life in denial. We cant let that happen. We need to look inward.I can tell you from personal experience thats very hard. I always struggle when something in my life ends. My first response is always to find a replacement. But Ive learned that everything has its place. You cant replace your friends with your boyfriend or girlfriend. You cant replace exercise with working more. You need to allocate the right amount of time and energy to all aspects of life.Thousands of years of evolution has shown us that human beings havesimilar needs. We need safety, support, relationships, joy, perspective, and something useful to do with our time. Thats true for every person. When you recognize that simple fact about life, it forces you to take a helicopter view. You need to elevate your perspective on your life. When youre stuck in a negative thought cycle, you have zero perspective. Youre consumed by your thoughts. You need to force yourself to look at life in general. Not just your current situation. Look at lifes nature- its about motion.Letting goMichael A. Singer, an entrepreneur who once ran a large software company, and the author ofThe Untethered Soul, summarized the concept of letting go wellIts pretty black-and-white. You either let go or you dont.He speaks from experience. Singer was prosecuted by the Department of Justice for securities fraud. During that time, he risked losing it all.Eventually, all charges against him were dropped and his name was cleared, but he let go of it way before that. In fact, he wrote The Untethered Soulwhilehe was being prosecuted. If a person whos facing the risk of losing it all can let go, you and I also can. People often come up with all kinds of excuses. They say its easier said than done and that letting go is not easy.No one said its easy. We all have our own challenges and obstacles. Sometimes people try to convince others that they arereallyhaving a hard time. Honestly, no one cares. You let go foryourself. So if youre stuck inside a negative thought loop, know that you only have two optionsYou continue and let it destroy youYou let go and move onThe choice is yours. And yes, its that simple. Decide between those two options and see for yourself. This article originally appeared on Darius Foroux.
